R-Mode Oscillations and Spindown of Young Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars

چکیده

Recent work has shown that a young, rapidly rotating neutron star loses angular momentum to gravitational waves generated by unstable r-mode oscillations. We study the spin evolution of a young, magnetic neutron star including both the effects of gravitational radiation and magnetic braking (modeled as magnetic dipole radiation). Our phenomenological description of nonlinear r-modes is similar to, but distinct from, that of Owen et al. (1998) in that our treatment is consistent with the principle of adiabatic invariance in the limit when direct driving and damping of the mode are absent. We show that, while magnetic braking tends to increase the r-mode amplitude by spinning down the neutron star, it nevertheless reduces the efficiency of gravitational wave emission from the star. For B >∼ 10(νs/300 Hz) G, where νs is the spin frequency, the spindown rate and the gravitational waveforms are significantly modified by the effect of magnetic braking. We also estimate the growth rate of the r-mode due to electromagnetic (fast magnetosonic) wave emission and due to Alfvén wave emission in the neutron star magnetosphere. The Alfvén wave driving of the r-mode becomes more important than the gravitational radiation driving when B >∼ 10(νs/150 Hz) G; the electromagnetic wave driving of the r-mode is much weaker. Finally, we study the properties of local Rossby-Alfvén waves inside the neutron star and show that the fractional change of the r-mode frequency due to the magnetic field is of order 0.5 (B/10G)(νs/100Hz) . A Timing Signature of Gravitational Radiation from LMXB Neutron Stars

The coupled evolution of the spin frequency, core temperature, and r–mode amplitude of an accreting neutron star is calculated. We focus on those conditions that can produce persistent gravitational radiation from the rmode. During X-ray quiescent phases of transient LMXBs, one may be able to identify the constant contribution of the gravitational wave emission to the spindown rate. Another sig...

R-Modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star

We study the dynamics of r-modes in the ocean of a magnetic neutron star. We modeled the star’s ocean with a spherical rotating thin shell and assumed that the magnetic field symmetry axis is not aligned to the shell’s spin axis. In the magnetohydrodynamic approximation, we calculate the frequency of ` = m rmodes in the shell of an incompressible fluid. Different r-modes with ` and `±2 are coup...

r-Mode Oscillations in Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars.

We show that r-mode oscillations distort the magnetic fields of neutron stars and that their occurrence is likely to be limited by this interaction. If the field is greater, similar1016(Omega/OmegaB) G, where Omega and OmegaB are the angular velocities of the star and at which mass shedding occurs, r-mode oscillations cannot occur. Much weaker fields will prevent gravitational radiation from ex...

Normal Modes of Rotating Magnetic Stars

We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the global oscillation modes of a rotating fluid star in the magnetohydrodynamic approximation. We present general equations for the modification of any type of fluid mode due to a general magnetic field which is not aligned with the star’s spin axis. In the case of any internal dipole magnetic field we derive the equations for the frequency corr...

Magnetar Spindown, Hyper-energetic Supernovae, & Gamma Ray Bursts

The Kelvin-Helmholtz cooling epoch, lasting tens of seconds after the birth of a neutron star in a successful core-collapse supernova, is accompanied by a neutrino-driven wind. For magnetar-strength (∼ 1015 G) large scale surface magnetic fields, this outflow is magnetically-dominated during the entire cooling epoch. Because the strong magnetic field forces the wind to co-rotate with the proton...
